ABOUT THE SHOW

Madmen Across The River:
Ben Arnold & Band with Acoustic Sets by Scott Bricklin & Jim Boggia performing the songs of 4 Way Street followed by US Rails featuring Ben Arnold, Tom Gillam, Scott Bricklin & Matt Muir

Ben Arnold has toured throughout the United States and Europe with various line-ups both solo and with his rollicking live band. He has shared a stage with everyone from Ryan Adams, David Gray, Ben Folds and Lucinda Williams to Ron Sexsmith, Randy Newman, Martin Sexton, David Johanson, Jackson Browne, Amos Lee and even a strangely mysterious week in Holland with Townes Van Zandt in the last year of his life. His lyrics remind you of John Hiatt and he's been told he sings a bit like Randy Newman, but writes hooks like Springsteen used to do in the '80s. His songs explore strong emotions while his music draws on rock, folk, R&B and all genres in between. Ben is also a member of US Rails, which tours regularly in Europe and has released 5 of their own records to date.

After releasing an independent cd in the early 90's Ben was quickly signed to Ruffhouse/Columbia Records where he released "Almost Speechless" a slacker songwriter disc which opened him up to wider international audiences. He has since released several independent records as well as "Calico" on The String Cheese Incidents' label, SciFidelity Records, Nevermind My Blues on Ropeadope and "Simplify" on Blue Rose.

His latest solo release "Lost Keys" is already drawing very positive reviews nationally and is in rotation quite regularly on Philadelphia's WXPN Radio. Featuring the songs "Stupid Love", "Nobody Hurtin' Like Me" and "When Love Fades Away", It is a collection of material drawn from the music of Motown, Stax, The Sound of Philadelphia and street corner Doo-Wop. WXPN Radio says "Lost Keys" is "A sleek and soulful work from a refined tunesmith. The brass arrangements paired with his husky baritone recall The Afghan Whigs’ New Orleans-rooted LP 1965; his self-described “sad guy drinking alone at the bar” ballads .(“Nobody Hurtin’ Like Me”) have a bit of Closing Time-era Tom Waits in them; and his pop nuggets are impossibly poppy, like the Randy Newman-esque bounce of “Stupid Love” that, I guarantee you, will be stuck in your head in the best possible way!"

ABOUT THE SHOW

Drummer Simon Kirke kept the beat as a founding member of two of the 70s most popular bluesy hard rocker bands - Free and Bad Company. A multi-instrumentalist, Kirke is best known for his loose, yet powerful back-beat drumming and for co-writing hits like, "All Right Now," "Can't Get Enough," "Bad Company" and "Ready for Love," with longtime bandmate and singer, Paul Rodgers. Though Simon is often found out on the road touring with Bad Company or Ringo's Starr & His All-Star Band, he continues to be a prolific singer-songwriter and storyteller, performing inspiring fresh material from his new solo album, "All Because of You," both in-front-of and behind the drum kit with his backing band, The Empty Pockets out of Chicago.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Celebrate the release of Peter Bradley Adams' new album at The Vault at Victor Records. A singer and songwriter whose work is musically subtle but emotionally forceful, Peter Bradley Adams was born in Birmingham, Alabama and grew up in a musical family, taking inspiration from his grandfather, a jazz musician proficient in the piano and clarinet. Adams began learning the piano when he was six years old, and went on to study music at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. Adams worked in film scoring for a while, but in 1999 he teamed up with singer and songwriter Kat Maslich-Bode to form the group Eastmountainsouth. In 2003, after the duo was discovered by Robbie Robertson of the Band, Eastmountainsouth released their first album through Dreamworks SKG Records. While the album received positive reviews and tracks appeared in the movies Elizabethtown and Lucky Seven and on the TV shows One Tree Hill and Dawson's Creek, Dreamworks' record division was dissolved later the same year, and Eastmountainsouth broke up in 2004. In 2005, Adams launched his solo career with a self-titled EP, and also began a sideline as a session musician, playing on albums by Michael Penn, Juliana Hatfield, and Josh Groban, among others.

In 2006, Adams released his first full-length solo effort, Gather Up, on the independent High Wire Music label, and partnered with the Seattle-based indie label Sarathan Records for his second album, 2008's Leavetaking. Adams' third album, Traces, appeared in 2009, and Between Us was issued in 2010. In 2011, Adams and fellow songwriter Caitlin Canty collaborated on a side project, Down Like Silver, who released a six-song EP of songs they wrote together. Adams launched his own record label, I Me Mine Records, in 2014 with his fifth solo album, The Mighty Storm, which was recorded in Nashville at the legendary RCA Studio A.

The reviews on this hot power pop act are in!

POPDOSE.COM

"Glen Burtnik doesn’t seem to know how or when to slow down. Always busy, always making music, always performing somewhere with someone, this multi-faceted musician is a local legend – having played with the likes of Styx, a variation of E.L.O., The Orchestra and having begun his journey in Beatlemania, playing (what else?) the McCartney role (at the same time Marshall Crenshaw was portraying Lennon).

Fast forward to the now and Burtnik (in the guise of “Lefty Weekling”) has teamed up with some very formidable musicians to create the magnificent Weeklings.”

POP-BREAK.com

"Asbury Park is filled with brilliant musicians and sometimes those musicians get together to create something magical. The current Godfather of AP, Glen Burtnik has joined up with Bob Burger, John Merjave and Dave Anthony. The foursome has taken stage names in order to create ‘The Weeklings‘"

ABOUT MARSHALL CRENSHAW

Over 25 years since breaking through to critical and commercial acclaim with his 1982 self-titled debut and its infectious, eradefining pop hit "Someday, Someway," Marshall Crenshaw creates an incredible new chapter in his career with his 429 Records debut Jaggedland. Crenshaw's first studio recording in more than six years is his most musically dynamic and lyrically intimate collection yet.

Classic Crenshaw attributes including an indelible sense of melody and tuneful essence combine to create a rich warmth and intimacy on every song of Jaggedland. The recording has a powerful vibe of immediacy thanks to Crenshaw's warm vocals and riveting guitar work. He takes the production to its highest levels working with a roster of well known musical heroes and veteran producers. Crenshaw first recorded two tracks in Upstate New York with Stewart Lerman (The Roches, Dar Williams), the melancholy "Sunday Blues" and the fiery rocker "Someone Told Me." Crenshaw did seven of the tracks at Sage and Sound Studios in Los Angeles with producer/engineer Jerry Boys (REM, Richard Thompson, Buena Vista Social Club), who had been his "wish list" since he heard the Mambo Sinuendo album Boys engineered for Ry Cooder and Cuban guitarist Manuel Galban in 2003. Highlights of these West Coast sessions are "Passing Through," the hopeful "Eventually" and the powerful "Long Hard Road."

The album title Jaggedland is a term Crenshaw says best describes the current state of his brain and consciousness. Simply put, the 12 songs are musical observations about the human experience, mortality, the state of the world and of course, love as viewed through the inimitable Crenshaw perspective. The sessions involved key contributions from legendary drummer Jim Keltner (whose credits include The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Brian Wilson and Joni Mitchell); guitarists Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Robert Plant) and the MC5's Wayne Kramer as well as legendary vibraphonist, Emil Richards (Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, Frank Sinatra).

"It was exciting and inspiring to work with such amazing musicians and producers. I fell in love with Mambo Sinuendo five years ago," Crenshaw continues, "and when I started thinking about recording my next record, Jerry immediately came to mind. When I found out that he was once an assistant engineer for The Beatles--that sealed the deal!"

"I also owe Stewart Lerman much of the credit for getting the ball rolling and inspiring me to start thinking about writing and recording this album," Crenshaw adds. "When we ran into each other at a political event in 2004, he gave me a pep talk and said he wanted to work with me. We hooked up about a year later and I started dabbling in new songs. As things went along, I started to feel like the material was taking on some unexpected dimensions and it dawned on me that I still have such a huge appreciation and respect for records as an art form--and a deep love for the power of songs and music. Even at this late stage of the game, with so many years and recordings behind me, I felt compelled to step up and reach as deep into myself as I could. That renewed sense of passion and commitment is the driving force behind the songs on Jaggedland, which I truly believe are some of my best ever."

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Crenshaw began playing guitar at age ten and he received his first break playing John Lennon in the off-Broadway company of Beatlemania. In 1987, he played Buddy Holly in the Richie Valens biopic "La Bamba."

Living in NYC, he recorded the single "Something's Gonna Happen" for Alan Betrock's Shake Records, which led to a deal with Warner Bros. His debut album, Marshall Crenshaw was acclaimed as a pop masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a first-rate songwriter, singer and guitarist. The record spawned the Top 40 single "Someday, Someway," which rockabilly singer Robert Gordon scored a hit with a year earlier. Crenshaw's second album, 1983's Field Day, was another critical smash and led to a successful slate of 20-plus years of studio recordings that offered a fascinating evolutionary journey through an array of musical landscapes.

A quote from Trouser Press sums up Marshall Crenshaw's early career: "Although he was seen as a latter-day Buddy Holly at the outset, he soon proved too talented and original to be anyone but himself." All Music Guide captured Crenshaw's vibe perfectly: "He writes songs that are melodic, hooky and emotionally true, and he sings and plays them with an honesty and force that still finds room for humor without venom."

As Crenshaw was developing Jaggedland's mix of poignant and incisive love songs and musings on mortality, he ventured once again into the film world, co-penning the title track to the hilarious, critically acclaimed John C. Reilly film "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story"; the track was nominated for a 2008 Golden Globe and a 2008 Grammy Award.

Over the last few years, Crenshaw has played 40 - 50 shows a year on what he dubs "the NPR singer-songwriter circuit." Says Crenshaw, "This album took a lot of wear and tear on my emotions, but in the end I think it's one of my best ever and I am so excited to have worked with so many of my favorite players on it. When people ask me why I keep making music after all these years, I have a simple answer: because I have to. For lack of a more colorful term, there is truly something magical to it and I never take it for granted."

ABOUT LEIGH NASH

More than two decades into her career, singer-songwriter Leigh Nash shines a light on her Texas roots with The State I'm In, a solo album that plants its feet on both sides of the border.

Nash was raised in the Texas Hill Country, where the radio stations played country music and the small towns rang with mariachi bands. A shy kid, she built up her confidence by learning how to sing. Nash began by impersonating the artists she heard on the FM dial — with particular emphasis on Tanya Tucker and Patsy Cline — before graduating to her own gigs at the age of 13, when she began singing with a country band during a series of weekly shows in New Braunfels. Within a few years, she'd also joined a band called Sixpence None the Richer, which ultimately introduced the pop world to her signature, sparkling vocal and led a successful run that included Top 5 hits like "Kiss Me" and “There She Goes.”

Kicking off her acclaimed solo career in 2006, Nash has spent the past decade exploring everything from folk to electronic music. The State I'm In marks a return to her days in the Lone Star State, though, with Nash whipping up a combination of Texas twang, Spanish influences, orchestral pop hooks and heartbroken lyrics. In classic country style, she sings about heartache and bad luck in a voice that swoons and sweeps, backed by a band whose members include Emmylou Harris and Wanda Jackson's pianist, Jack White's ace fiddle player and award-winning a cappella group Street Corner Symphony. If The State I'm In sounds like a country album, though, it's a wide-ranging, left-of-center, Latin American-tinged country album, with songs that tip their hat to the past while still moving forward toward something new.

Looking for a fellow rule-breaker who wouldn't mind pushing the envelope, Nash turned to Grammy-nominated musician Brendan Benson, who co-wrote one of the songs and produced the entire record.

"I've been wanting to make this record since I was 14, but I needed the life experience to do it," says Nash. "These songs are about the things you can't get back to, whether it's your father dying or your relationship ending or your band amicably breaking up. It's my own version of the music I grew up on, with an emphasis on hooks and melodies and heartbroken lyrics."

Releasing on September 18th on her own One Son Records in partnership with Thirty Tigers. The State I'm In was entirely co-written by Nash, whose shimmering voice seamlessly ties together the album whose track list bounces between ballads steeped in old-school pop arrangements ("Spider and the Moth") and breakup songs rooted in the brassy influence of Mexico ("Somebody's Yesterday"). "What's Behind Me" even tips its hat to "God Only Knows," the classic Beach Boys hit whose writer — Brian Wilson — has been a longtime influence on Nash's own music. Also tossed into the mix are barroom piano chords, barbershop harmonies, horns, bursts of electric guitar, fiddle and the steady pulse of an upright bass. "We weren't afraid of going beyond the country genre," Nash explains. "We just went where the songs told us to go. And they took us to some great places."

Nash, Benson and company recorded everything in Nashville, where Nash has lived since 1996. Even so, The State I'm In still creates its own geography, dreaming up an imagined place where Tennessee, Texas and Mexico all share the same border, and Willie Nelson lives next door to Ry Cooder, Roy Orbison and Flaco Jimenez.

"I tried to get Flaco Jimenez on this record!" Nash explains. "His sound is the embodiment of much of the vibe I tried to capture. We got it! But I still want Flaco to play on any and everything I do from here on out."

The same goes for Cooder, who has spent his career building a similar bridge between American and Latin American roots music. "There are few artists that have the kind of visibility he has had so far in his career. I'd also chew off a limb to have him collaborate on a song with me," she says, adding, "One of my limbs, not his."

For Nash, there's a lot to be happy about. The State I'm In may be rooted in loss, but it's also the most ambitious album she's ever recorded, anchored by songs that turn melancholy into melody. She's a proud mother, too, with a husband who co-wrote album highlights like "High is Better" and "The State I'm In." Alternately loose and lush, The State I'm In feels like a reintroduction to an artist who's never really gone away, with Nash finding new life in older sounds. It's music for roadhouses, juke joints, make-out sessions, breakups, gospel services and drives across the American desert. You can take the girl out of Texas…

ABOUT THE EVENT

MATT PORTELLA

“Everything is music and music is everything.” -- Matt Portella

For singer/songwriter Matt Portella, music isn’t just a passion…it’s a calling. Inspired by music at an early age, Portella was drawn to the incomparable songwriting, harmonies, and arrangements of The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and John Denver, and later by the dynamic stage presence of Kiss’ Ace Frehley. But it was always the full-bodied, raw and truthful sound of the acoustic guitar that stuck with him and would later become an integral part of his signature sound.

Early on, he looked to artists like Neil Finn of Split Enz and Crowded House who were redefining the music scene with an honesty, depth and emotion rarely heard in that generation, and started writing and performing his own music. Portella’s fan base immediately began growing from his first public gigs throughout the Philadelphia and South Jersey region. He quickly built a reputation in the singer/songwriter community as a must-see performer and was soon sharing the stage with some of the most acclaimed names in the industry including Dave Mason, The Bacon Brothers, Jeffrey Gaines and more.

By 2012, Portella was ready to commit to his first full length album with a complete band. He teamed up with bassist Fran Smith, Jr. from The Hooters and released Fractured Image in 2013. The CD was produced by Portella and co-produced by Smith and Andy Kravitz (Juliana Hatfield, Life of Agony). Tod Howarth (Ace Frehley’s Comet, Cheap Trick) joined in on some of the backing vocals. The 10-track album which was recorded in both NJ and CA received critical acclaim from the press and fans alike for songs like ““Boys”, “Three (Everyday)” and “Funeral”. Describing the album best is Pop Break which wrote, “Fractured Image defines who Matt Portella is as a person and as an artist. The record has something for everyone no matter what genre you’re into. He has succeeded in producing a vibrant, appealing album from beginning to end and it comes highly recommended.”

Representative of Portella’s knack for connecting with his audience, “Boys” is an emotionally-charged song with an ethereal vibe inspired by his then four year old son while they were watching Fourth of July fireworks.

The provocative topic and title of the song “Funeral” captures Portella’s unique brand of musical creativity. He describes it perfectly, saying “From the beginning to the end it just drives straight ahead with relentless rhythm and dark enthusiasm. I like the metaphors and symbolism in the lyrics about life, death and rebirth.”

Perhaps Portella’s most recognized song is his first single, “Three (Everyday)”. This catchy, melody-driven track features an upbeat guitar riff with memorable lyrics which the audience loves singing at Portella’s shows. “It's definitely a fan favorite. It always amazes me how many people know the lyrics and sing along,” said Portella.

Currently, Portella performs solo or with his band which is made up of Smith, drummer David Uosikkinen from The Hooters and Steve Butler from Smash Palace. His devoted fans never miss a show or a lyric. This is exactly how Portella likes it. “Both in my song writing and in my ‘day job’ as a criminal defense attorney, I use words to describe and convey emotions, thoughts and perspectives, whether to a music fan, a judge or a jury, so they see and feel what I so strongly believe in.”

Portella is a fan’s musician – approachable, humble and interested in those around him. “I love going out and meeting as many of the people who came to the show as I can. It’s an awesome experience for me, one that I always embrace, interacting and connecting with fans after a show. They’ve taken their time to come see me play and I want them to know how much that means to me.” Whether in front of thousands of fans or a jury of 12 people, Portella’s energetic performances always shine.

JEFFREY GAINES

In the words of ROLLING STONE Magazine, “Jeffrey Gaines is the voice of a new generation.”

Jeffrey Gaines has been heralded for his soul-searching lyrics and his powerful live performances.

With only his voice and a guitar for accompaniment, Jeffrey Gaines has earned a reputation as a captivating performer entertaining his audiences everywhere he goes. On the road for over 150 nights a year,  Gaines is preparing to record his eighth CD, featuring all previously unreleased songs (first studio album since 2003’s “Toward The Sun”).

Raised in Harrisburg, PA by parents more inclined to spin soul classics by Aretha and Otis than the New Wave and Brit Rock blasting from their son’s room, a teenaged Gaines began playing guitar in several local garage bands covering The Who, The Kinks, and The Jam. He soon decided to set out on his own and quickly landed a record deal in 1992, releasing Jeffrey Gaines, the first of his five studio releases. The album garnered four stars from The Philadelphia Inquirer, describing Gaines as “…an ethereal soul…insistent, impassioned, full of self-knowledge.” 1994’s Somewhat Slightly Dazed, and 1998’s Galore followed suite. Interview Magazine called Gaines’ music “soul-searching” and “refreshingly free of jargon, sentiment or cliché.”

In  2001, Gaines released Always Be (Artemis) to both critical and commercial praise. Featuring his emotional interpretation of “In Your Eyes” and his own soaringly beautiful “Always Be,” the album hit #5 on R&R Callout America CHR/Pop list, also reaching #45 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. The New York Post proclaimed Always Be as “a dozen-song mix…that completely illustrates the depth he is capable of.”

Gaines’ impressive catalogue grew with 2003’s Toward The Sun, produced by Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and Crowded House). The Boston Globe declared that “Gaines’ soulful, wounded vocals make a case for his being one of pop’s finest singers…an artist who deserves far more attention than some of his more hyped, yet less talented peers.” Mojo noted, “This established soul-folkie’s sexy growl has an underlying edge, making it a memorable album. Heartfelt unpretentious.”

Throughout his career, Gaines has built a rapport with his fans unlike any other in popular music today. Gaines goes as far as letting his fans influence the songs he performs each night. “When its just me playing, I only know the first song I’m going to play, but from there the energy and the vibe tell me what the next song is gonna be. Someone may yell a song, and I’m like ‘Exactly! Good call.’ That’s so fun to me, keeping it really exciting and spontaneous. I don’t even know what's around the corner, and the crowd doesn’t either.”  Based on that relastionship with the audience, Gaines released Jeffrey Gaines Live (CD / DVD) in 2004, followed by 2012’s Live In Europe, which was recordied during his 25-city tour with Joe Jackson.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Back by popular demand, the legendary Denny Laine & The Cryers return for a special show at The Vault of Victor Records! Singer/songwriter Denny Laine was born in the U.K. and was inspired by VICTOR RECORDS artist, Django Reinhart, to play guitar. Later, Denny joined The Moody Blues as a guitarist and vocalist singing their first hit single “Go Now,” which became the band’s break out single in 1964. In 1967, Denny left the band and would eventually join Cream’s former drummer in Ginger Baker’s Air Force. As that project began to fold, Denny was approached by Paul McCartney to form a new group and the two (along with Linda McCartney) formed Wings. From 1971 till the mid 1980s, Denny became Paul’s creative partner in Wings as well as in Paul McCartney’s solo career with appearances on "Tug Of War,” and “Pipes of Peace.” Denny’s contributions to Wings' “Band On The Run,” “Venus & Mars,” “Wings At The Speed of Sound,” “Wings Over America,” “London Town,” “Back To The Egg,” “Red Rose Speedway,” and “Wild Life” albums were integral to their sound, performance, and composition. In 1977, Denny and Paul composed the legendary “Mull of Kintyre,” the largest selling non-charity single in U.K.'s history and the prospective national anthem of Scotland. Since that time, Denny has continued to write and compose several critically acclaimed albums and songs.

ABOUT THE SHOW

The Peace Creeps is the current musical project featuring former A’s captivating frontman Richard Bush. Richard and his A’s were the darlings of Philly in the ‘70s and early ‘80s and had the hits “After Last Night” and “A Woman’s Got The Power”, which was later recorded by both Clarence Clemons and Jennifer Holliday. They released two albums on Arista Records and toured nationally, but they disbanded due to disputes with their record company. After that Bush had a few other bands and then took a long hiatus to write and record. Finally, along with guitarist John Marchiano, bassist Roy Fisher and drummer Jeff Pancoast, The Peace Creeps were born. Bush and song writing partner, AJay McLaughlin’s clever lyricism, along with their Elvis Costello–like wit, Faces–like looseness and the pop sensibilities of the Beatles are reasons for their appeal. Their second album, the backward looking/forward sounding, “Time Machine” is available at CD Baby.

Founded by Richard Bush, late of Philadelphia favorites the A's, the Peace Creeps feature a heady mix of Elvis Costello-like wit, Faces-like looseness and the wide open pop sensibilities of the Beatles.
